Environmental Studies Case Study

Context:

During the course of industrial development, certain components of an ecosystem can be damaged. In this particular case, a rare plant ( Saxifraga odontoloma ) was found to be threatened by industrial disturbance. To minimize the ultimate impact of the development on the surrounding ecosystem, it was deemed necessary to develop and implement a plant rescue program.

Goal:

To rescue plants from the site and develop a method for mass propagation, storage and ultimate re-vegetation of the site.

Approach:

•  Establish a method for vegetative propagation.
•  Define optimal storage conditions for the plants.
•  Develop a method for mass production and storage of the plants.
•  Characterize seed germination conditions.
•  Re-vegetate the site.
