Toxicity Identification Evaluations (TIE)

This is an extremely useful tool used to separate, characterize and identify the toxic constituent(s) present in complex mixtures. It is a tool for determining what is causing the effect. Understanding the cause allows better assessment of the risks and impacts and selection of appropriate remedial solutions or management options.

The approach involves

  • Confirmation of the presence of bioactive agent (ie. A compound that exerts a positive or negative response on an organism)
  • Characterization of the sample (analyses of major chemical properties)
  • Fractionate and test
  • Select most toxic fraction for detailed chemical analyses
  • Identify likely bioactive constituents or properties
  • Confirm findings (mass balance, standards, etc.)

Although these tests are mainly used in regulatory compliance monitoring by industry, they can also be used to evaluate different types of materials such as chemicals, elutriates, leachates, and products.
